Janine Helton

Biography

 

Janine Helton is a watercolor artist who has been recognized in watercolor competitions locally, nationally and internationally. Since childhood she has enjoyed hands-on creative pursuits, but it wasn't until the fall of 2009 that she began taking watercolor lessons with a local artist in her hometown of St. Charles, Missouri. Janine instantly fell in love with the medium and has pursued her passion for watercolor by taking workshops from nationally-known artists including Carl Purcell, Janet Rogers, Fealing Lin and Ted Nuttall. She now paints daily in her home studio.


Janine is a Best of Missouri Hands Juried Artist, a Saint Louis Watercolor Society Signature Member as well as a Signature Member of the National Watercolor Society, Women in Watercolor, the Transparent Watercolor Society, the Southern Watercolor Society, Watercolor West, the Northwest Watercolor Society, the Western Federation of Watercolor Societies, the Missouri Watercolor Society, the Illinois Watercolor Society, the Michigan Water Color Society, and the Georgia Watercolor Society.  


Artist Statement

 

Beginning with a loose and expressive underpainting, I work around the page in many transparent layers, considering shape, hue, temperature and value. I slowly add details with more precision until I am satisfied that I've captured the essence of the subject, the expression on a person's face, the moment in time. Watercolor painting for me is challenging, relaxing and exciting all at once. I enjoy experimenting with techniques and colors as I continue learning and growing as an artist.

Kaleidoscope received an Award of Recognition at the St. Louis Watercolor Society 2018 Big Splash Exhibition.

In June 2018 Breeding Blue was published in the Art of Watercolour, a French magazine for watercolorists around the world. The magazine has a Reader’s Competition in each issue and my painting was selected for issue No. 30, shown on page 9, under READER’S COMPETITION.

Proud Dad received the Award of Recognition at the St. Louis Watercolor Society 19th Annual Juried Exhibition in April 2018.

My Favorite Eight-Year-Old was selected for inclusion in the Missouri Watercolor Society 2018 International Exhibition in Qingdao, China.

Branching Out was selected for inclusion into the Georgia Watercolor Society 2018 National Exhibition.

Keep on the Sunny Side received the Award of Recognition #1 at the St. Louis Watercolor Society Big Splash Exhibition in 2017.

Korea Veteran received the Award of Excellence at the St. Louis Watercolor Society 17th Annual Juried Exhibition by Juror Sterling Edwards.

Here Comes Trouble was selected for inclusion in the Missouri Watercolor Society 2016 International Exhibition by Eric Weigardt, Judge of Selection.
