2020 SUPPLY LIST for NEGATIVE PAINTING with Janine Helton
Watercolors (Artist Grade Watercolors in tubes)
Bring whatever colors you have, but your palette should include at least one warm and one cool version of each primary color...Transparent, non-staining colors if possible. I will list my colors, but you shouldn't feel you have to buy them if you have something comparable.
• American Journey Sour Lemon or Aureolin (cool yellows lean toward green)
• Winsor Newton (WN) Winsor Yellow Deep (warm yellows lean toward orange)
• M Graham Quinacridone Gold
• Daniel Smith (DS) Quinacridone Burnt Orange or WN Burnt Sienna
• Holbein Brilliant Orange
• WN Scarlet Lake (warm reds lean toward orange)
• DS Quinacridone Coral
• DS Quinacridone Rose (cool reds lean toward purple)
• WN Perylene Maroon
• Holbein Mineral Violet
• WN Indigo
• Holbein Cobalt Blue Hue
• WN Ultramarine Blue (warm blues lean toward purple)
• Holbein Peacock Blue (cool blues lean toward green)
• WN Hookers Green
• M Graham Azo Green (this is my "fun" color)
Paper
I will be providing each student a quarter sheet (11x15) of Strathmore Aquarius II paper, which you will divide into smaller pieces. You may work as small as 4x6 or as large as an eighth of a sheet. You will work on several paintings at once to allow for drying time for each layer. You may want to bring your own favorite cold press paper such as Arches 140 lb for more practice. Do not bring student grade paper!
Palette with large mixing area(s) and a lid.
Brushes - any good brand is fine. Soft brushes are best for glazing.
• Rounds with a good point (my favorite synthetic brand is Loew Cornell 7020 Ultra Round and can be purchased at Dick Blick). Get a couple sizes; I recommend a #10 or #12 and #14.
• A large, soft, flat wash brush, 1-2" is good.
• A #6 (or similar) Rigger/Script liner brush (for spattering).
Subject Matter
Bring several of your own photos of flowers and foliage (to avoid copyright infringement), anything with a variety of shapes and sizes. It will be helpful to print your pictures the size you'd like to paint them.
Miscellaneous
• Plexi-glass or dry erase board for supporting your wet paper (about 12" x 16")
• Wood/porous board for drying (at least 12" x 16")
• A roll of toilet paper, paper towels, lotion-free tissue and/or old hand towels for controlling the water on your brush
• Small spray bottle (fine mist is best)
• 2B pencil (a mechanical pencil is good)
• Kneaded eraser (white Pentel Hi-polymer eraser is good, too)
• Notebook, sketch pad.
• Tracing paper and Graphite paper for transferring your image (Master's Touch at Hobby Lobby is very good)
• Two water containers
