Looking Ahead is a portrait of my niece, whom I’ve painted many times. I’m always trying to push my paintings in new directions, so on this piece I decided to use a cool base for the model’s flesh, rather than my usual warm tones.
At the time of the photo shoot, I felt like Taylor was looking ahead to her future and her transition into adulthood. I chose “messier” brush strokes and more arbitrary colors than I would normally use. I also pushed the darks further than I have in the past; I tend to be a high key painter. I wanted the mood to be one of optimism and hope in the midst of change and uncertainty.
Looking Ahead was selected for inclusion in the San Diego Watercolor Society 42nd International Exhibition 2022 by Juror Linda Daly Baker.
Looking Ahead was selected for inclusion in the 42nd Annual Adirondacks National Exhibition of American Watercolor 2023 by Juror Ken Call. Looking Ahead received the Garnet Award in Memory of Howard and Judith Slater by Sarah Yeoman, Judge of Awards.
